August 27, 2020This month, PUMA released a series of new football kits to be worn for the 2020/21 season by FC Valencia, AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City and PSV Eindhoven. What they all have in common is the cultural and passionate values of the cities they represent. Each new kit is influenced by fashion elements synonymous with the city.
In case you missed out on the stories behind the design, here’s an overview of what you can expect on the pitch.
FC Valencia
The new Valencia Home kit, colored in the traditional white with black sleeves, features a striking print inspired by the ribbed vault of the emblematic Silk Exchange building located in the heart of the city. The Home kit is a celebration of the city’s culture, which is a vital part of the club’s DNA. The Away kit is inspired by Valencia’s famous orange industry, a huge part of the city’s culture and economy. The jersey incorporates a unique print on a vibrant orange base, featuring a navy stripe running down the shoulders. The Valencia Third kit’s design and color scheme represents the mediterranean light. The famous painter Joaquín Sorolla used a style and theme, which he often used in many of his paintings. The jersey features a soft print in a combination with grey, lavender and sky blue.
AC MIlan
Milan is known as a true cosmopolitan city, which symbolizes luxury, sophistication and quality. The Italian city is widely regarded as one of the fashion capitals of the world. PUMA has created a unique AC Milan Third Kit to celebrate Milanese and Italian high-end fashion.
Pattern synonymous with tailoring: The iconic Houndstooth pattern is integrated into the jersey’s design to include a Milan specific detail. PUMA has also rotated the original Houndstooth pattern 45 degrees to showcase the ‘M’ in the pattern’s design. Playing on the architectural brilliance of Milan for the Home Kit, PUMA wanted to be inspired by the fashion capital for the Third Kit this season, as a huge part of the city’s global identity.
Borussia Dortmund
With the new BVB Cup Kit, PUMA honors the cultural and architectural DNA of the Dortmund. The rich yellow jersey with a black buttoned collar and square pixels represent the illuminated U seen across the Dortmund skyline. To maintain a perfect body temperature, PUMA equipped the new jersey with a thermoregulating technology, which provides an improved moisture management system. Combined with laser-cut perforation on the front and engineered jacquard at the back, the jersey offers the latest in fit and mobility for optimal performance.
Manchester City
The all-over pattern printed tone on tone of the new Manchester City away jersey is influenced by the structures and patterns of Castlefield and the Bridgewater canal in dark blue and black, with copper detailing. City’s third kit features a stunning paisley pattern, inspired by Manchester’s rich musical heritage and fashion culture. What makes Manchester unique is its pride of doing things differently – the vibrant fashion, the mad music, the famous haircuts as well as the stylish football.
PSV Eindhoven
Eindhoven is known for being ‘The City of Light’, a city vibrant with culture, collaboration and global influence. PSV Eindhoven’s new Third Kit embodies the history and culture of this forward-thinking city, with the red highlights in the graphic paying homage to the city’s GLOW festival.
Olympique de Marseille
Olympique de Marseille’s home jersey is inspired by the architectural culture of Marseille, which is inspired by the 20th century style of the Phocean City. The jersey incorporates distinctive lines which are symbols of key structures and buildings found throughout Marseille. The away jersey draws inspiration from the unique neighborhoods and multicultural DNA of the city. It represents the strong diversity of its districts, integrating iconic monuments into the design..
