Vintage Nostalgia

September 13, 2021Steeped in nostalgia, the newest collab between PUMA and Australian skate label Butter Goods harks back to the sportswear glory days of the late 90’s / early 2000’s. Showing off bold colours, baggy cuts and particularly on-point fabrics and finishes, the line is stylistically inspired by vintage skateboarding culture and sports marketing. Check out the contemporary outfit we put together with these bits of old school gold.
The Shoes
Footwear from the line showcases just what happens when you take PUMA sport heritage and combine it with a contemporary streetstyle approach. Classic silhouettes from the archives include the Slipstream – an iconic basketball shoe from the 80’s done anew in your choice of a dapper black or fresh white, both with leather upper and a dash of green detailing. There’s also the modernized Basket Vtg with a creative corduroy upper in bold orange or, as we have chosen for the look today, a cheery blue hue.
The Outfit
Rolling right along to the apparel, we see this lovely corduroy material showing up once again. A quintessential autumnal fabric, it is being highly favoured in men’s fall fashion this year. In classic skater style, a pair of loose-fitting track pants in a delicious shade of emerald green give the outfit a youthful vibe while still being suave enough to wear out. Next, the ultimate anti-cold item seeing a surge in popularity: we have a stretchy turtleneck to add another layer of interest in a rich blue hue that matches the shoes, this cheerful colour has been showing up everywhere as an ‘it’ colour in this season of menswear.
Overtop comes the crewneck sweatshirt from the capsule. With vintage graphics splashed on the front and back, it is one of our all-time favs from the series, really nailing the old school made new school skater vibes. An optional final touch if you’re feeling chilly: drape a stylish jacket over it all. With base pieces this cool, almost any kind would do, but we went with a thrifted green PUMA track jacket with a baggy fit that perfectly matches the theme established by the rest of the pieces.
The Accessories
It’s all about the micro details with accessories. We’re reiterating various textures to make the look more cohesive and interesting. Fuzzy kaleidoscopic cashmere socks peek out in the gap between the sneakers and the pants attributing that subtle sense of psychedelic counterculture; a blended cotton and corduroy baseball cap (a nostalgic streetwear staple) is a retro choice that keeps the outfit young. The turtleneck peeks out around the throat, tempting you to layer a few chunky silver necklaces over top to instantly add a curated and cool feel. Then comes the ultimate throwback piece made modern: a black belt bag made from leather and Ottoman knit. Finish off with few bracelets – beaded and braided leathered respectively – for a rugged, well-travelled allure.
