July 26, 2023Last Thursday, July 20th, the first games of the Women’s World Cup kicked off in Australia and New Zealand. With two PUMA teams, 88 PUMA Athletes and 107 pairs of PUMA Football boots on the pitch, our PUMA’s started the tournament off strong. We gathered the first match day stats after the first round of matches.
Morocco Make History 🇲🇦
The 2023 Women’s World Cup marks the first time Morocco has ever played in the tournament! Not only is this a huge achievement for the country and female players, it also highlights the first time an Arab or North African country has ever competed in the tournament. After a tough match, Morocco unfortunately lost their first match against Germany 6-0.
First Win for Switzerland 🇨🇭
Switzerland came into the tournament with power as they secured their first win of the tournament against the Philippines, with a 2-0 victory. Both goals came from PUMA players! Ramona Bachmann claimed the first with a penalty, and Seraina Piubel secured the win with her goal later on.

Alexandra Popp 🇩🇪
Two goals for Alex! Alex scored two important goals in the 11th and 39th minutes for Germany in their match against Morocco, helping secure their 6-0 victory. This was Alex’s 129th appearance for Germany and her 63rd and 64th goals. On top of this, the assist for one of Alex’s goals came from Kathi Hendrich!
Jess Carter 🏴
Jess was on the starting 11 for the England team in their first match against Haiti. In her first appearance in a World Cup for the senior England team, Jess helped the team to victory as they won 1:0.
Cristiana Girelli 🇮🇹
Goal from Cristiana! At the end of the match, Cristiana brought Italy to a 1:0 victory over Argentina as she scored in the 87th minute. Even more impressive, she only came entered the pitch as a substitute in the 83rd minute!
Fridolina Rolfö 🇸🇪
Fridolina scored an important goal to equalise Sweden 1-1 against South Africa, before her teammate score another goal to secure a 2-1 win!
Caroline Seger 🇸🇪
Caroline made her appearance on the pitch, making her the only Swedish player that has appeared in 5 world cups! Additionally, with 236 games for Sweden, she is the player with the most national team games in Europe.
Sherida Spitse 🇳🇱
A killer corner kick from Sherida made for an important assist in securing the Netherlands 1-0 win over Portugal.
