June 9, 2022Interview with professional golf athlete, social media influencer and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, Tisha Alyn
June 9, 2022Pro Golfer and PUMA Athlete Tisha Alyn shared her coming out story publicly a few years ago to give other people the courage to be themselves. Even today, Tisha describes her coming out as one of the most important days in her life. She is a strong advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and can be seen at many LGBTQ+ related events.
CATch Up had the chance to interview the multi talent. We asked her about the positive changes for the queer community in golf in recent years, where more action is needed, and her personal experiences.
“I can’t emphasize enough to eliminate any assumptions about gender and sexuality upon meeting someone. For example: starting conversations with “Will your significant other or partner be joining you today?” allows me to be open from the jump because I’m not assumed to be straight.”
Tisha Alyn, PUMA Golf athlete, social media influencer and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights
Tisha, you are one of the leaders in the LGBTQ+ golf community.
What would you say has changed positively for the queer community in golf in recent years?
Tisha: What has changed positively is that there has been more visual support and people speaking out on Pride. Since I’ve come out, there has been noticeable noise in the golf community. I believe in the power of numbers, so when you see someone in your world come out, it sends a positive domino effect. I can’t speak for the entire community, but seeing a lot more companies and individuals being an ally makes me feel protected and seen.
Where do you still see a need for action?
Tisha: There needs to be a culture change in the golf community when it comes to language and verbiage. We now see so many actual players, brands, and companies supporting Pride. However, the general golf population needs to follow suit. In initiating this change, I think we have to continue to make noise within golf brands, individuals in leadership roles, or anyone with a significant influence and educate the youth.

To not just celebrate LGBTQ+ golfers during Pride Month – What can be done to make the golf sport more inclusive for the LGBTQ+ community?
Tisha: The overall culture of golf needs to open to breaking down tradition and the status quo. I can’t emphasize enough to eliminate any assumptions about gender and sexuality upon meeting someone. For example: starting conversations with “Will your significant other or partner be joining you today?” allows me to be open from the jump because I’m not assumed to be straight.
Have you ever felt marginalized because of your sexuality?
Tisha: I’ve never felt marginalized, but I have absolutely felt judged whenever someone finds out about my sexuality because it’s not the first thing they assume when meeting me.
What advice would you give to queer athletes who are at the beginning of their careers?
Tisha: My advice is that no matter what sport you’re playing – be authentic, be you and go ALL IN!
Thank you very much for the interview, Tisha!
