From F1 tracks to fashion icons: The evolution and resurgence of PUMA’s best-selling sneaker

August 29, 2024

The PUMA Speedcat, a legacy that has spanned 25 years, is poised to be a market breaker in 2024. Originally designed for F1 drivers in 1999, the Speedcat has evolved from a motorsport essential to a fashion icon. This year, PUMA has reintroduced the Speedcat with subtle enhancements. Explore the rich history of the Speedcat, tracing its journey from its inception and highlighting the key milestones and innovations that have defined the Speedcat’s evolution over the past 25 years.

Initial idea

Since the 1980s, PUMA has crafted specialized shoes for Formula 1 drivers like Stefan Bellof, Christian Danner, Manfred Winkelhock, Gerhard Berger, and Hans-Joachim Stuck. These unique shoes were tailored individually with driver collaboration, and never featured in catalogues.

In 1999, PUMA board member Martin Gänsler, alongside designer Rudi Hieblinger and agency Création & Focus Design, developed a new motorsport shoe inspired by Stefan Bellof’s 1984/85 model. Collaborating with SPARCO, they produced the first PUMA FORMULA 1 Team shoes for Jordan/England. The initial Speedcat boots featured premium calfskin or kangaroo leather and fireproof lining.

The first Speedcat lifestyle shoes were officially launched in 2000, available in a Mid-cut and Low-cut version and from 2002 onwards with the recognizable embroidered PUMA CAT on the toe. During that time, motorsport stars like Michael Schumacher, who was a PUMA ambassador back then, were rocking the shoes as on the streets. The shoes quickly became a trend and remained very popular for over a decade. Over the years, the shoes underwent numerous transformations, featuring a variety of colour schemes, updated logos, collaborations and detailed design elements and were produced in a number of different materials such as leather, suede, nylon, patent leather, nubuck, pony hair and even linen. These changes contributed to the lasting appeal and iconic status of the shoes. In 2010, a golden Speedcat was introduced as a symbol of the shoe’s golden era. During that time, over 28 million pairs have been sold, making it one of most loved PUMA shoe.

The Speedcat’s influence continued to grow, and it became one of PUMA’s best-selling shoes!

After a decade-long break, the Speedcats have made a remarkable comeback since 2020. This break, which began in 2010, provided the team with the opportunity to reimagine their strategy and come back with renewed vision. The Speedcat’s resurgence is driven by its deep-rooted connection to motorsports and its appeal to Gen Z consumers who embrace vintage styles. For the initial release, the low-top Speedcat returns with lush suede finishing in black and red, nodding to iconic F1 racing teams. Influential figures in the fashion world, such as Emily Ratajkowski and Rosé, have been spotted wearing both the black and red colours , further cementing its status as a must-have sneaker.
