PUMA x STAPLE
We Celebrate the Year of the Dragon 🐲
February 9, 2024We Celebrate the Year of the Dragon 🐲
February 9, 2024With the Lunar New Year just around the corner, PUMA and STAPLE have joined forces for a new collaboration that commemorates the approaching Year of the Dragon. A New York community staple, STAPLE is rooted in music, art, sport and street culture ─ this latest collaboration with PUMA represents a fusion that imbues sports essentials with exciting urban elements. Inspired by the launch we’ve styled two slick looks that embody that powerful dragon energy.
The Shoes
Continuing their ongoing sneaker partnership, the revamped PUMA 180 debuts in two vibrant colourways — the Granola-Alpine Snow and Puma Black — while the PUMA Suede also receives a special Year of the Dragon iteration.
The first look opted for the skate-inspired 180, with its familiar hairy suede upper adorned with multiple overlays, a pebbled leather Formstrip, printed Pigeon and PUMA icons on the heels, thick padding and a rubber outsole.
Over on the other side, the iconic Suede showcases that same luxurious pebbled leather upper, complemented by a hairy suede toe box, heel counter embroidery, debossed “S” Dragon logo, tongue labels, a gold foil Puma Suede logo, brand icons on the heel tab, and custom graphic insoles, all wrapped up in a soft and sweet grey, white and pink colour scheme.
The Outfit(s)
The collection’s campaign showcases a collaboration with The New York Chinese Freemasons Athletic Club (CFMAC), founded in 1956, known for fostering traditional Chinese heritage through lion dance, martial arts, and athletics to cultivate teamwork and leadership among its youth members. Appointed apparel items in the line match to this fluid athletic expression, offering comfort and on-point style with a sense of heritage and strong cultural components.
The first look nails the nonchalant streetwear affect, centring itself around the iconic tracksuit from the line. The suit is composed of the relaxed fit sweatpants plus hoodie, both pieces coming in the comfiest french terry material with screen print graphics, adjustable waist and hood, with pops of colour contributed to contrasting agelets. Then we went with the washed-out grey tee with a beautifully distressed effect and bold dragon graphic flying across the chest. A houndstooth overshirt in black and white waves is best worn super baggy and layered over everything, whilst the finishing outerwear item is an elevated wool long coat with classic collar.
The second look flies high with an edgy feminine flair ─ a silky shift-style maxi dress is the starting point upon which the gorgeous all over print tee from the line pops out, where the dragon logo really comes to life against the black background provided by the dress. Wear it tied at the waist to emphasize shape, or loose and flowing for a more low-key mood. Taking a slight deviation from the ‘harder’ items, a soft V-neck cardigan in cotton-cashmere wraps you in comfort and class, before the single-breasted flowing faux-leather jacket tops it off with a bang.
The Accessories
The accompaniments stay understated and slightly restrained, which only adds to the cool metropolitan mood the whole line exudes. A smooth black leather multi-pocket backpack holds all the essentials in the first outfit, while a round-frame matte sunglasses complete things, full circle style. Ribbon drop bow earrings and a crystal embroidered clutch bag with black satin push the boundaries of what understated actually means, but in an effortlessly elegant kind of way that just makes sense.
The Year of the Dragon promises a bold burst of new energy that urges you to believe in your inner power. PUMA and STAPLE release their new co-creation just in time for the changing Lunar New Year, combining classic sportstyle and essential wardrobe staples with an uber-cool urban flair and sleek design details.
