CATch up talked to Alina Fuchte, Curator of the exhibition and Deputy Head of Education at NRW-Forum and Kunstpalast about the the rise and fascination of sneaker and about PUMA´s Senior Advisor General Management, Helmut Fischer (Mr.PUMA), who was invited as panelist by the museum.
Hi Alina, can you already say anything about the number of visitors?
Alina Fuchte: We currently have over 36,000 visitors and will probably end up with 43,000.
How did the idea for the sneaker exhibition come about?
Alina Fuchte: The NRW-Forum is an international exhibition venue that addresses current social issues and thus appeals to diverse target groups (even beyond the traditional museum visitor). Sneakers are more than just shoes: from childhood wish to status symbol to fashionable and political statement. In addition, the sneaker is both a design object and a pop-cultural phenomenon, which fits perfectly into the profile of the museum. This range fascinated us and is also reflected in the different chapters of the exhibition.
What have been your personal highlights so far and what feedback have you received?
Alina Fuchte: My highlight is the many school classes that visit the exhibition every day and bring the museum to life. It’s also great to see the children explaining to their teachers or parents what this or that shoe is all about and they can only marvel.
How did you become aware of our Helmut Fischer when it came to putting together the panel?
Alina Fuchte: We first became aware of Helmut through social media, but also through our colleague from THE DORF Mag, who told us about the publication of “PUMA _ The Graphic Heritage” in collaboration with Optik Books and a great talk by Helmut. At the same time, we were already talking to the PUMA Archive about loans for the exhibition, so it was a perfect fit. Helmut was a real asset to the panel and the other two speakers (Julia Schoierer aka SNEAKERQUEEN and Fabian Schumacher) also raved about his expert knowledge.
Thank you so much for your time and the insights, Alina!
